“Song of Mississippi”
Ron Kimble
Ron Kimble is a national treasure, in my humble opinion. Go watch one of his sets, and if he doesn’t evoke an emotional response from you, then you have no soul. I have been wanting to record with Ron for over a year now. I finally got a little bit of good news. Last night Ron agreed to let me come and record some of his originals. Most of you know that I’m working on Brother Shine’s album at the moment….well Ron Kimble’s will be my next project.
So here it is. The grand finale of, “Songs You Need To Hear By People You Need To Know,” is a recording of Mr. Kimble doing his own song. There is no way that I can do this better than what you’re about to hear. I can’t wait for your life to be changed……, just the way that mine was the first time I heard this Georgia storyteller pour his heart out. And I can’t wait to get started on his album.
Fear not. There will be more installments of songs you need to hear. This is just the conclusion of the first chapter.
Be well,
Levi
Butch Walker
“State Line”
I never got to see the Marvelous 3 live, so when my friends and bandmates Nathan and Daniel McGill found out that Butch Walker was playing at the Cotton Club in Atlanta it was a no brainer. They kidnapped me. I couldn’t hear anything for two days, except a constant ringing. I have been a big fan ever since. It was that night, though, when I realized that I wanted to spend the rest of my life as a performer. I am nowhere near his level, but I try to connect with an audience the way that Butch does every time that I play.
This is another selfish pick. Butch has a very loyal following, but i just couldn’t resist. So here ya go. This was a hidden track on Butch’s record entitled, “Letters.”
Head to www.butchwalker.com and to iTunes to get his newest album (Butch Walker & The Black Widows – “The Spade”).
Joe McGuinness
“Sinner’s Blues”
Joe McGuinness is one of those guys that I will invite to open for me, knowing full well that I’m going to get blown off the stage. I love listening to him play live. If you ever get the chance, please go check him out. He keeps great company. He’s constantly playing with some of the best musicians in Atlanta. In my humble opinion, it’s only a matter of time until Joe blows up and gets the attention and credit that he deserves.
Head to www.joemcguinness.net to download a free copy of Joe’s most recent live album, “Umbrella Sprouts,” right now. You can pick up his other albums on iTunes. I highly recommend……………all of them.
Travis Meadows
“Let It Go”
I met Travis Meadows through my friend Scott Gunter. He set me up for a cowrite with Travis several years back in Nashville. Every time I go up there now, Travis has the first pick of my schedule, and we usually do two days in a row. I have never walked out of a writing session with him without a song. He is one of my favorite writers, and it’s an absolute honor to call him my friend.
This week I thought I might kill two birds with one stone. I played a show in Nashville with Travis Meadows recently. Ian Donnelly was asking Danny and me about any old recordings that we might have that have never seen the light of day. As it turns out, we have a bunch. Most have and never will be heard. But I came across this old recording of the CHB playing a Travis Meadows song. We played this one out a couple of times, and it’s one of my favorites from Travis. So here you are, Ian.
Andrew Combs
“Too Stoned To Cry”
Clay Cook and I hit the road last winter playing songs and making fun of each other on stage. We brought a few folks along on the bus to help out with the daily goings on. Our merch guy was this young guy from Nashville named Andrew Combs. He was decent at selling our wares, but when Clay and I heard him play for the first time, we realized that he was better than both of us. He played a couple of songs every night for the remainder of the trip and even opened a few shows. He is a writer beyond his years. You will, no doubt, hear a lot more from this average merch guy and incredible artist.
