Ron Kimble is a national treasure, in my humble opinion. Go watch one of his sets, and if he doesn’t evoke an emotional response from you, then you have no soul. I have been wanting to record with Ron for over a year now. I finally got a little bit of good news. Last night Ron agreed to let me come and record some of his originals. Most of you know that I’m working on Brother Shine’s album at the moment….well Ron Kimble’s will be my next project.

Butch Walker
“State Line”

I never got to see the Marvelous 3 live, so when my friends and bandmates Nathan and Daniel McGill found out that Butch Walker was playing at the Cotton Club in Atlanta it was a no brainer. They kidnapped me. I couldn’t hear anything for two days, except a constant ringing. I have been a big fan ever since. It was that night, though, when I realized that I wanted to spend the rest of my life as a performer. I am nowhere near his level, but I try to connect with an audience the way that Butch does every time that I play.

Joe McGuinness
“Sinner’s Blues”

Joe McGuinness is one of those guys that I will invite to open for me, knowing full well that I’m going to get blown off the stage. I love listening to him play live. If you ever get the chance, please go check him out. He keeps great company. He’s constantly playing with some of the best musicians in Atlanta. In my humble opinion, it’s only a matter of time until Joe blows up and gets the attention and credit that he deserves.

Travis Meadows

I met Travis Meadows through my friend Scott Gunter. He set me up for a cowrite with Travis several years back in Nashville. Every time I go up there now, Travis has the first pick of my schedule, and we usually do two days in a row. I have never walked out of a writing session with him without a song. He is one of my favorite writers, and it’s an absolute honor to call him my friend.

Andrew Combs
“Too Stoned To Cry”

Clay Cook and I hit the road last winter playing songs and making fun of each other on stage. We brought a few folks along on the bus to help out with the daily goings on. Our merch guy was this young guy from Nashville named Andrew Combs. He was decent at selling our wares, but when Clay and I heard him play for the first time, we realized that he was better than both of us. He played a couple of songs every night for the remainder of the trip and even opened a few shows. He is a writer beyond his years. You will, no doubt, hear a lot more from this average merch guy and incredible artist.

Mac McAnally
“Socrates”

I was listening to Mac McAnally before I could talk. My mother had an extensive vinyl collection including several of his albums. Mac has been a Coral Reefer for years, traveling around the country with Jimmy Buffett. He has written tons of tunes with and for Jimmy. Mac has also had a lot of other artists cut his songs. One of my favorites being “All These Years” by Sawyer Brown. This week’s installment is a very selfish endeavor. I’ve always wanted to cover one of his songs. If you don’t own at least one Mac McAnally record, then you are missing out. Do your soul a favor and head to www.macmcanally.com and check out this true master of his craft.

Sammy Ensley
“Tow Rope”

I met Sammy Ensley in Hiawassee, GA at a Darrell Scott show. He was working that weekend’s festival for a radio station based out of Blairsville. Sammy was walking around in the parking lot handing out copies of his album, “Live in the Basement.” From Hiawassee to Clayton, GA I listened to that album, and I have been a Sammy Ensley fan ever since. I even cut one of the songs off of that record on an earlier release. If you look around hard enough, you will find a copy of myself and Sammy Ensley singing, “I Got It In Tune.” It’s one track of many that I’m sure you will enjoy from this incredible lyricist.

Ken Will Morton
“True Grit”

“Hang around Athens, GA long enough and you will undoubtedly overhear someone talking to their friend about Ken Will Morton. Most of the time the conversation will be encompassed by a reverence that is usually reserved for Townes Van Zandt (a great comparison [if I do say so myself]). He writes from a whole other place. I love the way he views situations and circumstances from an entirely different vantage point, producing those, ‘never thought about it that way,’ moments. Fester Hagood
“Young Again”

“Deciding on a song of Fester’s to cover was no easy task. I had thousands to choose from (literally). Fester Hagood is the most prolific songwriter that I know. He writes an EP a day. Fester was one of the first guys that I met upon coming to Athens, GA. I would do shows with his band, King Cotton, frequently. I looked up to him then, and now I’m honored to call him my friend. We get together as often as possible to write, and I’m sure you will see his name a few times in the liner notes of my new record.”
